Yessenia(she/her/ella) is a chicana filmmaker originally from Northern California who specializes in picture editing and is also passionate about writing and producing.

Most of her current work focuses on intersectionality and bringing Latine/x experiences to life. She constructs creative and representatives stories about the lived experiences of marginalized communities, hoping to spark conversations as well as curiosity amongst her viewers.

Artist Statement
DOUBLE CULTURA(2021) centers around children of immigrants having to be translators for their parents. Translating requires the ability to quickly and proficiently code switch in your mind, a cognitive skill multilingual children are still developing and practicing themselves. Being a translator or interpreter is a field of work, and for children to take on this position simply because office spaces, medical practices and government buildings don’t always have a translator available or on staff can leave a serious impact on their lives.

Through my short film, I hope to convey the pressures, the anxieties and the level of professionalism a child has to take on while being the sole source of communication their parents have. The level of responsibility a child of an immigrant takes on at a young age is substantial and their perspective needs to be represented on screen so that their voices can be heard.

Because social issues are never singular – they’re interconnected, I also wanted to show how disabled, working class immigrants are constantly undermined and overlooked in America’s society through my film. Their (in)visible illnesses and their economic and legal status cause them to live with several overlapping stigmas and obstacles. Seeing your own parent(s) live through these immense misinterpretations and misunderstandings while you yourself are also being exposed to these stigmas can leave detrimental effects on how you will grow and develop later on. It is for this reason I chose to make a film through the perspective of a child who not only witnesses struggle but endures struggle of their own at the same time.


LOGLINE:
Twelve-year-old Marisol acts as her mother’s translator in any given situation, but when she has to interpret medical terminology regarding her own mothers diagnosis, the stress and responsibility becomes overwhelming.
