Jurors' Statement
The AAS Pratt Drawing and Painting program is strongly represented by three artists working in a range of media rich in diverse approaches, techniques, and concepts.
Madison Fagan's mixed media paintings and drawings, with sensitively rendered figures placed in a kaleidoscope of chromatic patterns and shapes, capture intimate social moments that feel at once celebratory, nostalgic, and memorial--sentiments made especially poignant by our pandemic year of social isolation.
Tony Santos presents deeply contemplative linear abstractions that revel in complex patterns of radial symmetry and subtle nuances of color relationships. His richly painted textures document a dogged painting process and call to mind the accumulated histories found on urban walls and environments.
Shuyao Huang's sensuous and mesmerizing paintings contain lush figures and environments that span from naturalistic to surreal. Her clever imagery sometimes upends us like strange dreams that feel at the same time familiar and foreign.
These artists demonstrate real inventiveness, boldness, commitment to craft, and a strong sense of individual voice that portend their dynamic future contributions in the arts.
