Precipitated by the global pandemic, the design industry is facing enormous challenges as well as unexpected opportunities. As a result of the post-pandemic environment, all categories of common use space within our society are having to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. Safety concerns around shared air result in the need to keep us distant and/or isolated from people we know and those we don’t. Public health experts advise we avoid congregate settings limiting our ability to connect with others. Mental health experts have deep concerns related to prolonged isolation, disruption to education at all levels and a myriad of psychological concerns all exacerbating an already challenging situation.
