This research proposes a space of coexistence on Governors Island between humans and marine species by introducing an Archipelago. The implementation of buffer zones slows the current of the Buttermilk Channel by creating a Maze. These buffer zones are the manifestation of an Archipelago. The artificial reefs, constructed from eco-concrete, provide a habitable environment for marine species to be able to sustain and grow. Different varieties of species latch on the textured surfaces of these reefs, completing the food chain in Buttermilk Channel. The proposal of the Archipelago in the Buttermilk Channel is a physical manifestation of the long-lost connection which existed between Governors Island and Red hook, allowing people to cross the Channel.
