I want to use video games as an intuitive and free medium to extract and express thoughts and feelings, as well as share my ideas with players. I hope to present players with an experience driven by curiosity and inspire them to view life with a new perspective and attitude by integrating gameplay with storytelling and incorporating cultural, social, and lifestyle components into the games.
Artist Statement
Through all these years’ experience of playing and analyzing video games, I intend to extract and convey thoughts and emotions through the video game as an intuitive and free medium and share my ideas with players.
My recent project is the screen based 2D single player adventure role-play game made in Unity, Shaman. Shaman culture is the core of this game world. It is a culture that believes in animism, and trained specialists can communicate with many creatures and gods and get their help.
In the game, players take on the role of a shaman, fulfilling a man's request to find his mysteriously missing lover in the end of a declining ancient Chinese dynasty. Players will go through many scenarios and talk to various characters to gain information and find the truth. players will use the shaman's power to communicate with different animal immortals and gain their perspectives and powers to solve various challenges and puzzles. For example, when the shaman calls the eagle for help, the player will control a flying eagle and watch the vast land from the sky in search of a specific location according to clues.
I hope that players can keep curiosity and continue to explore the game through the whole game. Therefore, in this project, I try to bring players multiple perspectives and sensory experiences. Player will not only use their eyes to solve problems sometimes they will use their hearing. For instance, when the player is in the dark, he or she can use the bat's abilities. At this time, the player no longer looks at the screen to operate the protagonist, but reacts by judging the enemy's attack sound direction through his own hearing. In addition, I also try to integrate these gameplays into the context. The costumes, ceremonies, dances, ornaments, and magical implements contain a lot of Chinese traditional culture. The story of the specific commission carried out by the player is also adapted from a classical Chinese fantasy novel, Liaozhai. By playing this story as the shaman by themselves, the players can experience the ancient culture more detailed.
In the future, I will study the impact of curiosity on people and the methods to stimulate curiosity from the psychological level. Moreover, I will combine gameplay with stories and incorporate cultural, social, and lifestyle elements into the games, to provide players with an experience driven by curiosity and inspire them to view life with a new perspective and attitude.
