Artist Statement
hoodies. is body of work where I photograph people dressed in oversized hoodies. One of the main points in these portraits is the removal of the face by completely securing the hoods around the head. By obscuring the face, the audience is confronted with an unsettling and ambiguous presence. Due to the cocoon-like nature the figures are within, some of their senses are inhibited by my control. In this way, I am controlling the audience’s senses as well by manipulating both the composition of my images and the hooded figures as subjects.

I view the hoodie as a garment of protection. I have always worn these garments to keep to myself, to not stand out. I was protecting myself from outside judgments. I carry this same mindset within my portraits. The figures are protected from the viewer. The focus in hoodies. is not about who they are or where they come from. I want the physical features of those I photograph to be hidden from the viewer. My photographs allow anonymity.
