Abby Coté
My name is Abby Coté and I am from Spartanburg, South Carolina. I completed my undergraduate years at Sewanee: The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee where I received a bachelor's degree in English Literature and Art History. Southeastern Appalachia has always held a place in my heart so writing a thesis about one of the region's most talented artists, Beverly Buchanan, seemed appropriate. Additionally, during my time in New York City, I found that Southern Appalachian voices and subsequently Southern Appalachian art is often dismissed as trivial or rudimentary. I hope "'Guns, Ghosts, and So Forth:' Beverly Buchanan's Reconstructions of Black History" will highlight the incredibly diverse and resilient artistic communities of the rural South.
While this paper focuses on one Appalachian artist, there are countless others waiting to be discovered. The Johnson Collection in Spartanburg, SC is an incredible resource for learning more about Southern artists and their unique understandings of nature, community, folklore, and history.
