PLASTIQUE

My ambition in designing clothes is to create something colorful, fun, and humorous. I manipulate and exaggerate classic silhouettes, with the intent of pushing my designs towards the fashion of tomorrow.

My senior thesis stemmed around growing up with Barbie dolls and the beauty idealisms around her. Being the only girl in my family, I was always gifted Barbie dolls for every holiday. I grew to love Barbie and her incredible sense of style. Like a celebrity, she is an icon that will always be remembered, and that I find interesting in itself.

My muse is someone feminine like classic Barbie, mixed with today's woman-- someone with an edge.

Artist Statement
After researching vintage Barbie clothes, I chose to use fabrics such as vinyl and coated tyvek to create the same oversized, exaggerated silhouette with a plastic feel. I wanted my collection to feel like how you would go into your mom's closet when you were younger and start piecing random clothes together of different fabrics and styles. I chose to layer some of my vinyls and tyveks over classic wools and knits to bring this dress-up game to life.

*Due to the pandemic, I obviously could not shoot my looks on real-life models so I am thankful to have other ways of technology to show my work. I used photoshop to put my fit photos from the school year on a Barbie model I created from vintage Barbie heads and shoes mixed with runway model bodies so that the proportions would be correct. I then put my models in the interiors of Barbie Dreamhouse themed homes to showcase my work.
