I am inspired by symmetry found in nature. I think of symmetry in the context of parts of the body like faces, ears, hips, the shape of our body’s systems, and how they somewhat mirror insects and other naturally symmetrical things like flowers and fruits. Thinking about symmetry led me to think of how when there is one side of something there is always another side, whether it be a reflection, a copy, or an opposite. In something that is symmetrical, there is a divide down the middle. A divide implicates the idea of a binary, how there are two sides. My work is currently focused around the idea of "twos," of dualities, binaries, and symmetries. Thinking about divides in context of painting has pushed me to use other materials in my work besides oil paint, like oil pastels and charcoal; I’ve also started manipulating surfaces of canvas and stitching them together, adding an element of tension to my work and the tangible awareness of how symmetry is always being pulled and pushed. I am attempting to possess the feelings and experiences I have, to claim my space in a world of twos and of splits down the middle.
