Pilgrimmage Quaterly
My project addresses how religious fashion is expressed by movement. These issues are explored in Met Gala: Heavenly Bodies and a Dior fashion show by Beuro Betak. I intend to explore this through a journey to a place associated with someone or something well known or respected. A similar idea is explored in the thesis project Faith Estates by Akara Architect and Suspense by Sophia Chang. That project is important to my thesis because it forces us to think about the relationship between religion, movement, tourist, and landscape. My site is the James Far-ley Building Post Office located on 31st and 33rd street and 8th avenue.
I am working with this site because it connects with the subway station which leads us to a new desti-nation and forces different kinds of culture to be in the same space. My program has to do with how the act of procession and prostration relates to the semiotics of fashion. I am working with this program because it’s an intersection between fashion and religion in the act of giving to the users. A similar program was observed at The Floating Piers by Christo and Jeanne Claude and Le Ciel Bleu by Jose Selgas and Lucia Cano. In my visit, I found that there are a lot of different types of user groups around the site. By working with this program and site, I hope to accomplish a place that frames and reflects cultures/religions of New York through the form of giving and taking which is related to my idea about movement in fashion.
