Confronting the Shadow
Mikayla LaFleur
This body of art is an accumulation of work I’ve made through the process of shadow work. Shadow work is an exploration of one's unconscious mind and shadow self. The shadow self can refer to the rejected, repressed, and darker parts of one's self. These private depictions of the darkest corners of my soul are not meant to be shared and the final product is not intended to be an important aspect of the process, yet here it is, on display for your eyes only. My body of work includes meditative works that we’re done with my eyes closed, art generated from my subconscious and art that was sparked by negative emotions such as anger, shame and guilt. This art is a part of a larger project on shadow work in which I explore the question: what effect does shadow work have through means of artmaking in transforming one's psyche and overall mental health? Through this project I use data from outside sources, feedback from volunteers who participated in my shadow work research and my own experience doing shadow work to answer the following questions: What are some artistic shadow work exercises and how do they work? What is the experience of creating shadow work art like for the practitioner? And what effect does shadow work have on one’s mental state? Through this study, it was concluded that shadow work can help the practitioner know themselves better by learning about their own subconscious, and help to improve their overall mental state.
