Project Detail
Challenge and Opportunity:
In the past fifty years, the cities in China experienced unprecedented changes. The criteria to evaluate city’ attractiveness has also evolved from an economic-driven model to a more vibrant model that fully embraces culture, community and commerce (3C). Future cities are expected to be more liveable, green, smart, humanistic, innovative and compact. Most cities are challenged to adapt to this vision and transform in a world faced with climate risk and equity risk, especially the Third-Tier Cities which are perceived as having limited creative resources and a larger cultural equity gap to fill.

Creative solution: This action research discovers the best practices of creative placemaking and its unique value added to seven types of community capitals: social, natural, economic, human, cultural, built and political capitals and ultimately advance city vitality. By designing an Experiential Collaborative Seminar hosted by the third-tier cities in China and a Creative Community Data Portal that visualizes the community capitals, this creative solution facilitates multi-stakeholder collaboration and data-informed decision making for urban planners.

Rationale:
This work integrated the program learning in leading and managing cultural enterprises and addressed critical global challenges listed in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on:
Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being
Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals
