Jamilabelah Caraballo
Jamilabelah Caraballo is a digital painter based out of Brooklyn, New York. Inspired by movies and video games focusing on fantastical stories and wildlife, from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron to Ori and the Blind Forest, Jamila creates art featuring characters and creatures that only appears in fiction and mythology. As they went through trials and tribulations during their time in Pratt Institute, art was the number one coping mechanism they had, for they could draw sad creatures of the forest looking at their burning home, perfectly representing their emotional turmoil.

Despite the struggles, they had found happiness in helping others bring their own ideas and emotions to life. On various days, they would be approached by others, willing to pay for their illustrative services to conjure up figures that they struggle to bring to life on their own. One day, however, Jamila does aspire to one day create illustrations for a children's book, for the imagination of children are abundant in innocent carefree imagination, untainted by the horrors of reality.

Artist Statement
I am Jamilabelah Caraballo, an illustrator born and raised in New York. Ever since I was little, I have had a fascination with animals and how they can be utilized to tell stories. That fascination was even enhanced when mythological creatures such as the unicorn and the dragon were introduced and from then they opened up doors to many imaginary stories. Other mediums outside of movies and television were introduced to me and they only drove me to do what I can to improve upon my skills. Video games and illustrative books quickly became one of my favorite methods of telling a story, and so I was interested in the artistic aspects of said stories. Upon enrolling in Pratt Institute, I decided to set my heart on becoming an illustrator. Despite the challenges I was told, my goal is to illustrate for a children’s book, and not necessarily of my own creation. Whether or not I would draw for my own book or someone else’s, it would still bring me great joy to help bring ideas and stories to life. My artistic goal is to create paintings that show fantastical scenarios that reality could not replicate on its own.
