Audrey Ji and the Playscape Exhibition

Technological advancements are our main source of communication, especially in time of social isolation. We look at our phones for hours without the urge to look up to communicate with the world around us. The playscape is a space which encourages people to get to know each other by creating community events, activities and social spaces for people to enjoy.

Playscape
Growing up, I imagined spending time with my friends in fun places and fun activities and as a child, a lawn with some toys or a playground was sufficient. It changed as I got older. There were less places I could enjoy with my friends. I really resonated with a quote,
“ We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”
-George Bernard Shaw
I imagined what it would be like to create an adult playground. This idea would pop up in my head every once in a while. When I was younger, these ideas were filled with fantastical elements and everything I ever liked. Each step of the way, my ideas would become more mature and grounded in reality. As what I was interested in changed, so did what I wanted to create. At this point, these ideas were just for me and one of many of my dreams. I’d like to think that everyone has an ideal version of their home or their world that they have built up throughout their lives. And within lies the urge to keep the aspects of life they are keen to. I hope that no matter where I am in life, I will be able maintain that play inside my head, have an escape from reality that will help keep the balance of everyday life.
Gather Around
As a social being, I have found the act of socializing to be very complicated. It can be fun, but it can also be stressful. The core of socializing is being able to share your lives with one another, share an experience or share a moment. Sharing, as I will later mention is the core of creating something with a completely different purpose through design. Designing to share means designing not for one or many but the connections between one and many.
