Artist Statement
I'm Hiu Ching Leung, a Hongkonger multimedia artist who lives in Brooklyn, New York.

My work addresses the political issues in Hong Kong and emphasizes the in-between state. I continually question my position between New York and Hong Kong, the boundary between Hong Kong and China, and the lines that simultaneously connect and separate the viewers between me and my work.

I translate tyranny and censorship into actions, such as carving, blending, and erasing. Histories and messages are embedded in materials, such as wood shaving, book pulp and bricks, and processes of making. I hide the encoded, fragmented moment of truth in-between, on top of, or behind the area of oppression that has often been ignored. It requires viewers’ time and effort to discover and decode the hidden messages within my work. However, some of the works are not decodable mimicking the oppressive experiences of the current political realm.
